Pollution is a serious issue that affects our day-to-day lives in big and small ways. This Earth Day is a reminder that our daily actions are investments into the future of planet earth, our collective home.

Tackling issues like pollution sounds daunting, but small changes in our habits can make a big difference, especially when we make that commitment together. Whether we’re taking public transportation or remembering to recycle or, even making smart flushing habits, we can all do our part to protect the planet.

#FlushSmart Habits Protect the Planet

One of the most overlooked, environmentally conscious habits can be practiced in your own bathroom. And it can have a bigger impact than you might think! As of July 1st, 2022, a California law mandated that all non-flushable wet wipes commonly used in the bathroom must be marked with the “Do Not Flush” symbol on their packaging. This symbol is a reminder to consumers that these products should be thrown in the trash, never the toilet. If we all do our part to stay #FlushSmart by checking for the symbol before flushing the wrong thing, we can prevent these non-flushable wipes from congealing with fats, oils, and grease (FOGs) to create fatbergs. These are large, cement-like masses that lurk in our wastewater infrastructure. As these masses grow, they damage sewage systems and lead to nasty spills that contaminate our environment, and cost millions in Californian taxpayer-funded utility services to reverse and repair.

If that wasn’t bad enough, these sewage spills could create serious health risks for people, animals and the overall environment. Sewage spills can spread harmful bacteria and diseases, putting humans, wildlife and sea creatures at risk. Even our own drinking water supply can become contaminated, which can be particularly disastrous..

This just goes to show that small actions lead to big consequences, and your flushing habits are no exception. Do your part to protect waterways this Earth Day by looking for the “Do Not Flush” symbol on wipes packaging. If you see the symbol, remember to toss that wipe in the trash – and NEVER the toilet.
